Warrior Priest

"Where is your faith on this dark day? Chaos rides against you – will you let these beasts destroy your hearths and homes, or will you trust in Sigmar and fight? Forward men, and drive back this Chaos rabble! For the Empire! For Sigmar!"

- Damaslaus VanNemut, High Chaplain of Sigmar

Zealot

"He is Tzeentch! The Changer of Ways! The Raven God! The Lord of Mutation! He is the master of all that changes, and the changer of all that remains! His will is Chaos, and all the creatures of Chaos are but fleeting thoughts in his vast mind!"

– Drang The Preacher, Zealot

This month we profile the Empire-controlled zone of Ostland.

With its back pressed hard against the Middle Mountains to the south and west, the Grand Principality of Ostland is a province dominated by the dark and forbidding Forest of Shadows. Hulking and ancient, the trees of this vast woodland realm shroud the land in a perpetual green dusk, broken only by the occasional clearing or settlement hacked from the dense undergrowth. Ostland is a realm of damp, creeping mists and shifting shadows that conceal the remnants of millennia of civilization and conflict behind an impenetrable veil of foliage.

This month, we showcase more of the unique architecture of the Empire.

Covered Bridge
Crypt Door

Dock
Milegate and Wall
Small Bridge
Graveyard Mausoleum

Much of the Empire is themed after 16th century Germany while mixing in other interesting aesthetics from across Europe. You’ll see high-pitched roofs on half-timbered, Tudor-inspired homes with a touch of gothic, sculptural details. Inquiring minds may find interesting similarities in the castles of the Empire to the Burg Eltz and Neuschwanstein Castle. However, the Empire has its own history and culture that elevate it’s aesthetics beyond that of mere historical recreation.

Since the world of Warhammer is always at war, buildings of the Empire are constructed with defensive measures already in place. Very few structures have windows on the first floor and most have entrances elevated above the ground level. These are extremely sturdy structures that short-lived humans then pass down through many generations. Each successive owner then adds to the building or shores up aging walls. This gives the construction a great organic feel with tacked on dormers, chimneys, and extended rooflines. Finally, the citizens of the Empire are fond of displaying their allegiance to their lords and their gods. Therefore, many of the building prominently display the various symbols of the Empire, such as the Twin-tailed comet and the Hammer of Sigmar.

While the architecture of the Empire may have a familiar “Old World” feel, there are distinct historic and cultural influences that give the structures there own unique character.

Last week, senior members of the WAR development team held a riotous conference call with numerous websites to talk more about the Empire and Chaos. As you can imagine, it was a cacophony of facts (from Jeff), crazy talk (from Paul), and 80's movie references (from Josh). You can download an audio file of the call here and check out what the press had to say below.

Everything I Need to Know About Design -

I Learned in Kindergarten
By Josh Drescher, Senior Designer

If you’re like me, you’ve been playing games for as long as you can remember … You’ve played terrible games and wondered how on earth they got made.  And you’ve played decent, imperfect games and thought of a million little ways that YOU could’ve done things better.

Most of you will probably never decide to take the plunge, as it were, and put some of your ideas to the test.  This is a good decision because it means there are fewer people competing for my job.  I encourage you all (or at least those of you in the U.S.) to go out and become bakers instead.  America suffers from a severe lack of quality baked goods.

For the rest of you – that brave number who have your sights set on one day working on a Real Game – read on. >>

"We are setting ourselves apart in so many different ways such as; RvR, Public Quests and the Tome of Knowledge (just to name a few). I have no doubt of our future success, it is just a matter of how massively successful WAR will be ;)"

"My hope is that we make a game that causes you to forget about life for a while and simply have fun. I’ve always thought of games as an escape: a way to experience things above the ordinary. I want a player to enter our game world and be awestruck with the scale, scope, and detail to the world. I want the game to be a success because the world needs to know just how cool Warhammer and its history really are. It is a story worth telling and a story worth experiencing"
