DECEMBER 2008
NUMBER 38
Live Event: Keg End

Cheers, Beers, and Jeers in
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning

Get into the holiday spirit with WAR’s latest in-game event - the Dwarf New Year’s festival of Keg End.

Running now through to the 5th of January, Keg End is a festive extravaganza packed with great new items, monsters, events, and challenges for all players to master. Keg End is filled with the things Dwarfs like best - Beer, Boasting, and things that explode.

Whether you’re letting off fireworks as you charge into RvR or searching for beers on an Altdorf Pub crawl, there’s plenty to do for Order and Destruction alike. Search out the Legendary Golden Stein to benefit from its damage boosting aura of Frothy Goodness, or compete with your friends to partake in the best bit of bragging the Warhammer World has ever seen.

Keg End introduces a new emote - /boast (of course) for you to fire off at your adversaries. Make sure you set it to a macro because there are rewards to be gained if you do it just right. You can also grab a free beer and /toast your comrades in arms to receive special unlocks.

Keg End is here, with the mud and the blood and the beer!

WAR Update 1.1a is Here!!

With 1.1a, we have been working hard and listening to player feedback to make the great game of WAR even better. We’re proud to introduce to the game several exciting changes that you requested! These changes include the following:

  • Two New Careers - The Knight of the Blazing Sun and the Black Guard have joined their allies and are now available to play for everyone!
  • Open RvR Influence System – As part of our ongoing effort to encourage people to take part in oRvR, we are pleased to announce the release of an influence system geared solely to oRvR. Players who participate in this part of WAR will now have additional incentives for fighting for their realm. As part of this patch we have also made quite a number of changes and fixes to oRvR places and NPCs as well.
  • Easy Public Quests – PQs are great but sometimes it’s hard to get enough people together to complete them, especially in the lower tiers. So, we are redesigning one PQ per chapter so that it can be completed by 1-3 people.
  • Chat Hyperlinking – One of the most requested features by the community has been adding the ability to hyperlink items, abilities and quests in the chat window and now it has been added.
  • Armor Set Improvements – Armor Set Improvments – We have made a number of adjustments to armor sets to ensure that they continue to be some of the most attractive items in the game. In addition we have made adjustments to ensure they are more frequently available to players at all levels.
  • Main Assist – RvR is exciting, chaotic and always challenging but this feature will make it just a little bit easier to help your group fight the good fight.
  • Player Statue System – Nothing says “you’ve made it” more than having a statue with your name on it in the capital city of your realm.
  • New Content – Whether it is new lairs, new quests and changes to items, this patch is full of lots of fun new content additions to the game.
  • User Interface – Lots and lots of fixes, changes and new additions to our user interface and API functionality, new additions to the chat system and graphic options incorporating community requested features a channel flashing on activity, the ability to turn the chat bubbles on/off, a gamma slider and so much more.

Career Masteries

Shadow Warrior Masteries

Path Of The Scout
The Path Of The Scout focuses on delivering devastating attacks from a great distance. A Master of this path will prepare patiently and then strike swiftly, unleashing a deadly hail of arrows with grim results. A Shadow Warrior specializing in this strategy will prefer to stand his ground as far away from his enemies as he can, and force them to come to him.

Path Of Assault
The Path Of Assault teaches Shadow Warriors to augment their bow attacks with blades as well. Someone who adopts this strategy will prefer to first cripple their target with bow fire, and will then bring the fight to the enemy instead of remaining back at a distance. While even a specialist in this path will still place their trust in their longbow, they will be able to easily throw an enemy off-balance by charging in to the fight instead of trying to keep their distance.

Path Of The Skirmisher
The Path Of The Skirmisher is a strategy for close-quarters combat. Focused on short-distance bow attacks, someone who specializes in this path will still remain mobile while drawing their shots. These nimble attacks grant deadly flexibility to the Shadow Warrior - while he must get much closer to his enemies, he does not have to remain stationary and is able to draw his targets out into bloody ambushes.

Magus Masteries

Path of Havoc
This path focuses on long-range attacks, and specializes in destroying a single target at a time.  A master of this path will typically call forth a Pink Horror to help him slaughter his enemies from a safe distance.  While the Magus may sometimes appear vulnerable due to the intense concentration that shaping raw magic requires, the unsuspecting foe who thinks that they face a weak enemy will only have a brief moment to be shocked and dismayed before the blasts of chaotic force remove them from this life.

Path Of Changing
A specialist in this path understands that change waits for no man, and that Tzeentch demands speed and swiftness in those who serve.  The cost of this decision is that his spells dissipate more rapidly into the Winds and therefore are only effective at moderate ranges, but a master of this path is a quick and adaptable sorcerer who uses a summoned Flamer to great effect.

Path Of Daemonology
This path is primarily focused on tapping into the power of warping and twisted chaotic energy to unleash massive blasts of power at close range.  In conjunction with a summoned Blue Horror, a specialist in this path can rend and shatter everything around him, leaving a trail of ruin and destruction in his wake.

Realm WAR Update

It is a sad fact of life, but there are times when you may be unable to play Warhammer Online.  Gainful employment, for instance, while handy for paying the bills, can sharply curtail your time on the battlefield.  Surely absence makes the heart grow fonder, so you may yearn for the clash of arms and to see your enemies driven before you.  But more importantly, who’s sacking your Capital City while you’re putting in your time working for The Man?  Has your Guild held onto that Keep, or have they lost it?  Who is that jerk that keeps killing you?  Is he a legendary killer from the top of the Leaderboards, or just some lucky newbie?

All this and more can be answered by a visit to the Realm War section of the Warhammer Online web site.  There, all characters and all guilds on all servers are available for your perusal.  Leaderboards track the movers and shakers throughout the Age of Reckoning.  With the click of a button you can see exactly how the war is going for your side from a bird’s eye view of each racial pairing all the way down to the Bettle Objective level.  A wealth of information is there for the taking.

Here are some of the features we've added:

  • The Realm WAR offers many new features to help you stay in the game even when you can't login! Check out the changes for yourself by visiting realmwar.warhammeronline.com.
  • Fixed Leaderboard Weekly calculations to correctly represent the current leaders. Weekly Leaderboards are calculated at 05:00 EST on each Monday.
  • Changed Realm War section of the web site to reflect new navigation options.
  • Added Realm War selection page with server status and direct links to each server's RvR Racial Pairing pages.
  • Racial Pairing pages display current status and level of each city, status of the Tier 4 campaign, and victory point sliders for each zone.
  • Added maps of each zone that focus on RvR lakes and display the status of each Battle Objective and Keep, as well as Guild Keep ownership, and when the Keep was last taken.
  • Provided a Campaign status pop-up so players can keep a discrete tab on the progress of the war on their server.

Excluside New WAR Fiction From Nathan Long
and Mike Lee

All across the lands, Knights of the Blazing Sun and Black Guards have been spotted leading their respective forces into battle. A conflict of epic proportions is brewing. To commemorate this historic occasion, we’re pleased to bring you the final installments of the original WAR fictions from two of The Black Library's most favored authors, Nathan Long and Mike Lee.

Nathan Long, author of the Blackhearts series and the latest Gotrek and Felix novels, introduces us to the Knight of the Blazing Sun in THE SWORD IS FORGED. He tells the story of Regina Seibolt and her initiation into the Order of the Blazing Sun in the service of the warrior goddess, Myrmidia.

CRUEL AS ICE, COLD AS STEEL, from Mike Lee, author of the Malus Darkblade novels), follows the adventures of Rathann Darkmoon, a highborn Dark Elf warrior and aspirant to Malekith’s Black Guard.

We are very excited to present the final chapters of these thrilling new stories inspired by WAR in this month’s newsletter. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out all three riveting chapters for each story on the WAR Herald!

“Customer Service is a great way for anyone to get their foot in the door in the gaming industry and we recruit only people with a strong passion for gaming and the desire to become one of the key players who make games for a living.  With each new hire, I get to experience the excitement and hope that comes along with being a part of Mythic.”

Darrin Hyrup: Senior Director, Operations

“Early on I told myself I never wanted a career with computers since I didn’t want to spoil my hobby.  As such, in college my plan was to become a corporate attorney.  Luckily, before I lost myself down that dark path, I eventually determined that being a lawyer was nowhere near as fun as making games, so I changed my mind and decided to embrace computers (and games) as a career.”
